When people tell you they got emotional and cried in a film about someone making a cake, you know you did something right.
This was my short film Cake Creation starring fabulous food writer Ren Behan pictured here.
I shot the film in a beautiful country cottage with all sorts of distractions you don’t see on screen. This included an excitable dog called Buddy who wanted to eat the props, equipment and of course the cake we were filming. Luckily he waited until the end to have a slice. It was also lucky that Ren had extra ingredients with her as I smashed several of the eggs on the floor before we even began shooting. After long evenings in front of the computer editing the piece, Cake Creation was ready.
Then came the exciting news that our film was selected from several hundred submissions to be in the first St Albans Film Festival. It was amazing to watch our film on the big screen and to see people’s reactions. Several people had told us they found the film very emotional and had even cried. I hadn’t expected that reaction but it’s always great to get an emotional response.
At the sparkling closing ceremony the winner was announced and I did the clapping & smiling thing that you do when someone else wins an award. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Keep going, you’ll win another time.” It was Kubrick, not Stanley himself but his lovely daughter Katharina. I felt very fortunate to be part of the film festival and to have met so many fantastic people along the way.
